Breadfruit is the fruit of the breadfruit tree and is sometimes called the tree potato or breadnut. Its name is derived from the texture of the moderately ripe fruit when cooked, similarly to freshly baked bread and having a potato-like flavor. It is one of the highest yielding food plants with a single tree producing up to 200 or more fruits, about 450lbs each season.
Breadfruit consists of 71% water, 27% carbohydrates and 1% protein. As a superfood, it is an energy-rich food and a good source of complex carbohydrates, fiber, and minerals such as potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese, zinc. It also provides B vitamins, niacin, thiamine and Vitamin C and is gluten free. Since it is packed with so many nutrients, it is said to lower cholesterol, fight infections, promote youthful skin and healthy hair. It contains a good amount of fiber that reduces the rate of glucose absorption, making it a diabetic friendly food.
